Order forms will be coming home this week with your children. We need to have all orders turned in by December 1st. to guarantee delivery before Christmas break. We will be offering beanies and a ball caps this time. Below are pictures of the 3 different styles available. The cost for each hat is $13.00.

Grey beanie with braids. It will be embroidered with the Discovery Dragon in the school colors.

Green and grey beanie. Will be embroidered with the Discovery Dragon in school colors.

PTO Meeting

There will be a short PTO meeting on Tuesday Oct. 18th. The school is asking for $3000 from the PTO. There is a grant that is available that would match the funds. This would give Discovery $6000. Mr. Marlow will be at the meeting to go over what he plans to do with the money. We will meet at 2:45 in the library.

We will also vote on if the PTO is willing to provide the transportation for field trips again this year.

Box Tops!

We are off to another great year for Box Tops! Our goal this year is $3,304. We will again be having a classroom competition with a party going to the class with the most box tops collected. Just a few things to remember as you send box tops to school:

1) Please check the expiration date as we cannot use expired box tops. Also, if there is not an expiration date on the box top, it is not an official box top.

2) When using the collection sheets, please limit the number of box tops to whatever is indicated on the sheet (25 or 10). Box tops can also be sent in a ziploc bag.

3) Please keep soup labels (labels for education) separate from box tops.

Read -A-Thon starts TODAY!!!!

The fall read-a-thon starts today with 100% of the proceeds going to the school!! Our goal is 90,000 minutes. We want all students to participate whether they collect pledges or not. Each students should set a goal and record this on the pledge form envelope. Ask parents, family, friends, etc to sponsor your reading with a fixed amount ($1, $5, etc). Money is due Tuesday, September 27. September 23 will be a school read-in and students can wear their p.j.s. September 30-watch Mr. Marlowe get stuck on reading!!!!

We hope you all enjoyed the kid's first day back to school. I know my house was a lot quieter. Many of the teachers have sign-ups in the classroom if you are willing and wanting to volunteer to help in the classes. You can help with any or all of the class parties (4 for the year) and/or help in the classes with reading groups, etc. You can also email the teachers if you are not able to make it into the classroom. Emails can be found here. (Some teachers are not on the list but you could email the principal, Mr. Marlowe, and he can forward it the teacher.) Stay tuned for more updates!!

Registration is August 16th. Class lists will not be posted yet-it's usually the week after. If you filled out the forms at the end of the school year last year then you don't need to come. Your child must 5 years old on or before September 1, 2011

Please bring:

your child (they will have a quick screening to help you better determine their readiness)

Certified Birth Certificate (the official one, the one from the hospital doesn't work)

Immunization Records (needs to be up to date)

Proof of Address (utility bill, drivers license, etc)

(if you don't have these things you will still be able to register your child but will be placed in the unfinished pile of paperwork and you may not get AM or PM as requested.

Christmas Music Program

Parent/Teacher Conferences and Book Fair

This week we have parent-teacher conferences scheduled. If you have an appointment set you should have received notification for that. If not please contact your child's teacher (click here for a link to the emails). There is also the Scholastic Book Fair in the library all week. Please feel free to come in during school hours and see what great deals they have on books for your child as well as the teacher's wish list!!

Harvest Festival

Come join us Thursday, October 28 for the Harvest Festival from 6-8pm. All proceeds are going to help the teachers with supplies for the year. You can still purchase punch cards for $4.50 (50 cent discount) today and tomorrow.

There are also raffle tickets for themed baskets for participating classrooms-all money going to that class!!! These are $1 each or six for $5.

The PTO is helping provide bake sale items. So if you have time (or want to purchase some items to donate) please deliver them during school hours on THURSDAY or bring them to the festival (no one will be there after school to deliver them to.)

The Discovery community is putting together a cookbook and we need your submissions. Recipe forms and instructions will be coming home with your kids this week so keep your eyes open and dig out your most beloved recipes.

A big thank you to everyone that participated in the Read-A-Thon. It was a huge success and the kids did awesome with their reading and gathering pledges. The total reading minutes for the whole school was 167,000 minutes.

The highlight, of course, was Mr. Marlowe riding "Ralphie" the camel and giving him a big kiss.
Congratulations to Jamyn and Whitney L. who also got a ride on "Ralphie" for collecting the most pledges.

Box Tops for Education

We are off to a great start this year on Box Tops! Thank you to all who saved up over the summer.

There may be some questions regarding the Bonus Box Tops with a code that has to be entered in at a website. There are a couple of options as to what to do with these: 1) Send them to school with your child and I will enter them in and give credit to your child and classroom. 2) Enter them in yourself. If you do this, and want your child to get credit for it, please send them to school with your child's name and teacher. It would also be helpful if you could indicate that these have already been input to the website.

There will also be a classroom competition with a prize for the classroom with the most box tops. The competition will end sometime in December. The box tops can be sent to school using the collection sheets from the website or in bags of 50. If you have any questions, please contact Heather Jensen at heatherjensen@cableone.net or 589-3445.

Read-A-Thon

The PTO is having a READ-A-THON fundraiser. Your student will be given a packet with information and a collection envelope. They can collect pledges from parents, family, friends and neighbors to sponsor their reading. 100% of the proceeds will go to the school. The PTO plans to use the money raised during this event to enhance the school environment and provide materials and/or resources for the students, staff, and teachers of Discovery Elementary.

Our school goal for reading minutes is 50,000. Each teacher will help the students to set a personal reading goal. We want all students to participate in the Read-a-Thon whether they collect pledges or not.

The students can collect pledges in fixed amounts from
March 12th -19th.

From March 15th -21st the students must read or be read to daily. There is a reading log to record their minutes read each day. The students must return their VERIFICATION SLIPS to school each day to be eligible for the book fair certificate drawings.

From March 20th-24th the money needs to be collected from the sponsors and returned in the envelope to school. All envelopes need to be returned to the school by Thursday, March 25th.

If the school meets the reading goal of 50,000 reading minutes, Mr. Marlowe will kiss a PIG.

Every student that participates and meets their goal will get a ribbon and a coupon for a free Friday treat. Every student that meets their goal and gets $40 or more in pledges will get a medal. The student with the most pledges and meets their goal in each class will receive a trophy. The class with the most collective pledges will get a trophy to keep in their classroom for the remainder of the year.

Fall Carnival

I just wanted to remind everyone about the upcoming Discovery Elementary Halloween Carnival this Thursday, 29th October 5:30-8pm. There will be lots of FREE activities, food (small charge), a small Silent Auction and a Bake Sale.

If there are any of you that are willing to bring bake goods that would be REALLY appreciated. If you do, you can bring it any time that day and you can put it in Mr Marlowes office. After school we will have it set up in the gym so just bring it there.

Also if there is anyway interested in donating something for the silent auction that would be wonderful. Just let me know, Zoe 522-8141. Also call me if you could help with everything. We have a lot of volunteers already but the more the merrier!!!

I hope this night will be a great success and your kids will have a great time as well as yourselves. Thanks for always being so willing to help.

Cookie Dough

Your children should have received packets for cookie dough orders!! This year the money will be used for school improvement such as library books and playground equipment. Check out the catalogs-take them to your neighbors, family and friends!! All orders are due October 16. Good luck, have fun and be safe.

We have collected 4637 as a school so far this year!!!!! That equals $463.70 in just one month-WOW!!!! Please continue to support your school and classes. Please check expiration dates- we cannot submit the ones that have expired. You can use the collection sheets on the Box Top Website if you need addition ones or just make a copy of the original sent home. You can also send them in bags of 50 with your child's name.

Campbell Soup Labels

Wondering if we should start collecting the soup labels. Iknow many parents send them with the box tops and I have been just throwing them out. I heard it wasn't worth it-but then I got thinking what if it is? I was wondering what opinions anyone has about it and if they are willing to do the collecting part of it? Welcome to another year at Discovery. We are excited to already have money in the budget this year for some of our projects. One we are continuing to do is box tops. Please send them with your child's name either on the collection sheets sent home or from the website. You can also send them in bags of 50 with your child's name.

The Box top competition will end at the end of April. Current totals are: Mrs. Patience with 646, Mrs. Smith with 561, Mrs. Davenport PM with 387, Mrs. Martineau with 325. There are additional collection sheets HERE on the box top website if you need them. Double check your expiration dates-we can't submit anything that has expired. Keep bringing in your box tops. We will receive a check in April with all box tops submitted by Thursday, February 26. The classroom and family competition will run until the end of the April. Please continue to support our school with your box tops. Call grandparents, aunts & uncles, neighbors. The class with the most box tops wins a pizza party and the family with the most collected will receive a $50 Craigo's gift certificate. Double check expiration dates, we cannot submit anything that has expired. There are several to expire June/July 2009.

You can also go through the box top website to shop online and a percentage of your purchase will be donated to the school. Stores include Walmart, Aeropostale, all the Gap stores, Barnes & Noble, Old Navy, Oriental Trading, Overstock, Target, JCPenney. Just go to the Box Tops Marketplace. 25 Cent Friday!

Wow- who new how successful our first day of 25 cent Friday would be! I think every kid in that school brought money. Shari Bruce and I were working at the table and almost everything we had sold out! It was pandemonium at it's best! The kids were really excited and seemed to really love the whole thing. It made pretty good money for the first time too! If there is anyone who wants to help with this on Friday's, call Shari Bruce or post a comment here. We will need 2 people at least for a little while. I think Shari has made a schedule for the first couple of months, but she made need more help, or fill ins! Also a reminder- the cookie dough sale will be starting this week. I hope everyone is getting ready for this! I really hope it will be very successful.

Calling all helpers!

So- I have a couple things we need help with, or at least need to start getting geared up for. Mr. Marlowe asked us if we could have someone come in and help cover Judy Ritter (the secretary)at the school while they have faculty meetings. Up to this point she has not been able to go to them. It will be on Wednesdays (only every other) starting at 2:55 and going for about an hour. I think all you would do would be fielding phone calls and taking messages. It doesn't need to be the same person every time but it would be nice to get a few people that would be willing to help so we can call on them. The next meeting is September 23rd. Leave a comment on this post if you are interested,or email me at bawdenmom@hotmail.com. Also, we need to get ready for the spook alley at the end of October. If any of you have husbands or brothers or neighbors or you who really like to scare kids- please let me know! We have some great ideas but we need the manpower! If anyone has a husband like mine, that is one of their favorite things is scaring their kids! Also, any connections to props or anything that would be cool in the spook alley, let me know! I think this could be very fun and very successful if we have a lot of help! Thanks for all your help with everything!

I'm so excited Felicia started a blog for Discovery!! This will be such a great place to share resources and stories, and to get to know each other. I am Felicia's sister-in-law and my name is Bonnie Blad. I have 5 children. They are Madi (12), Alex (almost 10), Gabby (7), Jake (4), and Jaxson (5 months). We are a busy, but happy family. We just moved here from Twin. The kids have adjusted well, and are loving their new schools. We are so happy to be a part of the Discovery family, and can't wait to get to know more of you!

Go Dragons!

Today the mascot for Discovery Elementary was announced! The kids voted and they chose the dragons! This should be a really fun mascot to work with! If anyone has great ideas or has seen some really cool dragons, please let me know! Hope everyone is as excited as me and my kids are!

Grandparent's Day

What a fun day for the first graders at Discovery Elementary! Many grandparent's came to brag about their wonderful grandchildren and tell about their experiences they had in their own school years! It was so cute to watch the kids as their grandchildren listened to them brag! Some of them were a little shy, others smiled with pride, others just sat there looking happy that they had grandparents who love them so much! It was so fun to be there. I was with my son in Mrs. Grimm's class so I gt a picture of them together but I'm sure all the classes had just as much fun! Thank you for all the hard work 1st grade teachers!

A Year Of Discovery!

I am so excited to introduce myself to all of you! I am Felicia Bawden and I am the PTO president for Discovery Elementary. I have 4 kids- Natalia is 9, Bradford is 7, Bailey is 4, and Isaac is 2. I am a busy mom but that is how I like it. I'm not sure what I would do if I could rest for too long! I am so happy to be involved in such a great way this year. I love going to the school and helping out in any way I can. It's a great way to be involved in my children's lives and education. So far this has been a great start to what I hope will be a great year. We have a lot of things planned and hope to get as many people involved as possible! All of the faculty I have met are tremendous and I have heard that the teachers feel the same way about our kids! Isn't that great! I, for one, am happy to hear that! I intend for this blog to b a place that we can post activities and announcements and any fun info that anyone has. I hope it can serve as a sort of "journal" for our school. Please post if you feel like it- even if it is just a neat or funny story you want to share. Maybe you want to tell something neat about your student's teacher. It's our blog so let's make it awesome! I will try to post some pictures now and then and keep you up to date as much as possible. Let's have a wonderful year! I know we can when we work together!
