Santa's Workshop



We are in need of volunteers to help with Santa's workshop December 17-21.  The kids can come and buy little items ranging from $0.35 to $10. The shifts are 8:30-10:30, 10:30-12:30, and 12:30-3pm. The kids get really excited about finding that special gift for their family members!!! If you are able to help please leave a message or contact a member of the presidency.

Box Tops Contest Winners!!!




The results of the fall Box Tops contest are in. Here are the top 3 classes:

1. Mrs. Davenport's Kindergarten PM class
2. Mrs. Olson's first grade class
3. Mrs. Haderlie's fifth grade class

Mrs. Davenport's class has earned a pizza and root beer party, and Mrs. Olson's and Mrs. Haderlie's classes will also be receiving treats this Thursday. Great job to all 3 classes!

In all Discovery students collected 9,182 box tops! That is approximately $918 earned for our school! Great job! Our spring contest is already underway, so please keep sending in your box tops!!

Dragon Dash 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run


Discovery Elementary will be hosting The Dragon Dash 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run on Saturday, September 22, 2012.

All proceeds from this event will be used to purchase technology for our student's classrooms.

The 5K race will begin at 9 a.m. at Discovery Elementary and the 1 mile Fun Run will begin at 10 a.m.  Check-in and packet pick up will begin at 8 a.m. at the school.

Registration begins now and will continue until race day.  Register early to guarantee a shirt and goodie bag.

Registration

Registration will be held on August 15th. from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.  If you have a new student attending Discovery Elementary this year you will need to provide a birth certificate, proof of address and immunization record. If you registered early you do not need to attend registration, however you may still want to go over if you need to check bus routs or sign up for reduced lunches.

Spring Carnival

It is carnival time!!! The Discovery Dude Ranch Carnival is on Friday, May 11th from 5:30-8:30. There will be food, prizes, and games. Discovery Night at Starlight Skating

Book Fair

If your child earned their free book (they should have come with a certificate), they can use those toward a book  at the book fair next week.  Grades 1-3, it's a $2 certificate, Grades 4-6, it's a $4 certificate.  Any questions call Jaimee Sorensen at 523-5865

The book fair will run Tuesday -Friday in the library during school hours and during parent/teacher conferences.

If your child has earned a free book from AR reading please contact Jaimee Sorensen at 523-5865 or mark.jaimee@gmail.com.  We will be placing an order on Thursday, March 22 so orders need to be in by 8am that morning.  You can see titles on Scholastic.com (this is the book search link) or through the book orders your child's teacher may have.

Proposed Changes to the By Laws

Below are the proposed changes that we will vote on at March 15th's PTO meeting. We will meet at 7pm in the library.

ARTICLE VI: FINANCIAL POLICIES
Section 6: MONEY FROM FUNDRAISERS

Current:
The profits collected from major fundraisers will be divided equally between the PTO and Discovery Elementary. Profits collected from Friday treat sales will be given to the library for the purchase of books and Accelerated Reading test.

Proposed Changes - Option 1:
All profits from fundraisers shall be used to enhance the education and opportunities of Discovery Elementary students. Fifty percent of profits from major fundraisers shall be set aside by the PTO for use by Discovery Elementary. The PTO shall disburse funds to Discovery upon receipt of invoice(s) for items purchased by Discovery. All profits from the sale of Friday Treats shall be set aside for the library for the purchase of books and incidental materials necessary for the library. The PTO shall disburse these funds upon receipt of invoice(s).

Discovery Elementary and the PTO shall collaborate to determine the best use of funds. The PTO shall disburse funds for approved items. Barnes & Noble Night

Our school is participating in a fundraiser for the library at Barnes & Noble.  It will be Thursday, February 23 and Friday, February 24.  You can shop anytime during the day from 9:00am-10:00pm.  Just mention Discovery Elementary at checkout.  If you want to order online just enter the school code 10141240 when checking out.  (If ordering online go through boxtops for education first so we can get credit too.)

Children need to arrive 15 minutes prior to their performance time.

Kindergarten Roundup-March 12, 9am-1pm, Parents need to bring Birth Certificate, Immunization Record and proof of address (i.e., utility bill). 

AR Prizes

Several children have earned a free book with AR Points.  If your child has done so they will come home with a "gift certificate".  If your child has earned a "free book" through AR they need to contact Jaimee Sorensen, 523-5865 or via email, mark.jaimee@gmail.com.  Parents can look through book orders or online at store.scholastic.com and decide on a book for their child and then let me know which one.  All orders will need to be placed before May.
